🥪 National Eat A Hoagie Day

Forget politics, pandemics, and Wall Street — today it’s all about National Eat A Hoagie Day.

The celebration honors the long, layered sandwich that goes by many names: hoagie, sub, grinder, hero. The tradition traces back to Italian-American communities in Philadelphia in the early 20th century, where the combination of Italian cold cuts, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and dressing was piled high into crusty rolls. The name “hoagie” is often credited to Philadelphia shipyard workers nicknamed “hoggies,” who carried these hearty sandwiches to work.

The day recognizes both the sandwich itself and its many regional variations across the United States. While “hoagie” is Philadelphia’s word of choice, most of the country knows them as subs, and in New England they’re just as likely to be called grinders. Whatever the name, the essence is the same: a long roll, stacked with meats, cheeses, vegetables, and that messy-but-perfect balance of oil, vinegar, and seasonings.

For this year’s National Eat A Hoagie Day, I photographed three Jersey Mike’s Original Italian hoagies, cut and stacked against my signature black background. Jersey Mike’s, which started as a single sub shop in Point Pleasant, New Jersey in 1956, has grown into a national chain with over 2,000 locations. They’ve built their reputation on freshly sliced meats and cheeses, rolls baked fresh daily, and sandwiches made to order “Mike’s Way” — onions, lettuce, tomato, oil, vinegar, and oregano.

The hoagie is both a cultural icon and a humble meal — straight from the bag, unstyled, layered with flavor and history.

Burger King Brisket Whoppers – Straight from the Bag

“Have it messy, have it bold.” Burger King just introduced the Brisket Whopper—a limited-time sandwich loaded with smoked meat, fried onions, and plenty of marketing swagger. I bought four. No unwrapping, no rearranging. Just pulled them from the bag and stacked them. This is how they actually look.

Each sandwich layers smoked brisket on top of a flame-grilled beef patty, with crispy fried onions, melted American cheese, pickles, tomatoes, and mayo, all stacked onto a sesame seed bun. It’s part of their 2025 “You Rule” campaign—a continuation of their brand overhaul that leans into more indulgent, messier, and bolder fast food.

This brisket release is marketed as a “Flame-Grilled Brisket Collection” and includes variations like a Brisket Melt and spicy builds in some regions. The brisket is smoked up to 12 hours (according to them), then dropped right onto their Whopper foundation. More sauce, more layers, and definitely more marketing.

I photographed them as served—no styling, no adjustments. Just the real thing against a black background.

Behind the Scenes: Cluckin Bun for National Fried Chicken Day

Most people are posting fireworks and flags this weekend. I already posted Emily, my AI assistant in a bikini poolside, making a Caesar salad for the weekend—so now I’m posting fried chicken.

Today is National Fried Chicken Day, so I picked up these Jr sandwiches from Cluckin Bun, a Nashville-style chicken spot that’s popped up here in the Palm Springs area. This shot is a bit of behind the scenes—the sandwiches just as they came, still in the takeout packaging, before I photographed them unwrapped directly on the black background for my Bag to Background series.

That’s what the series is about: no stylists, no fake sauces, no nonsense—just real fast food, exactly as it is, photographed against a clean black background. For this project, I’ve been seeking out the lesser-known fast food spots like Cluckin Bun, along with the big chains, to capture what people are actually eating.

National Cupcake Lovers Day – A Classic Favorite

Before gourmet bakeries and Instagram-ready frosting, there was one cupcake nearly everyone recognized: the Hostess CupCake. Today, June 13th, is National Cupcake Lovers Day—unofficial, unexplained, and completely justified by the staying power of this classic snack.

Cupcakes go back to the late 1700s in American cookbooks, but the Hostess CupCake, introduced in 1919, was the first to be mass-produced. It started simple—just chocolate cake—but by the 1950s it gained a cream-filled center and its trademark white icing swirl.

It’s still going strong. Hostess sells more than 600 million CupCakes each year, making it arguably the most popular chocolate cupcake in America.

Falafel Wraps for International Falafel Day

June 12th marks International Falafel Day—a time to acknowledge one of the most enduring and portable fast foods in the world.

Falafel traces its origins to the Middle East, with Egypt often cited as the birthplace of the dish. Originally made with fava beans and known as ta’amiya, the recipe evolved across regions, eventually incorporating chickpeas and becoming a staple in Israel, Lebanon, Syria, and beyond. Today, falafel is found everywhere from street carts to fast food chains, often claimed by different cultures but universally loved for its crisp texture and bold seasoning.

For this year’s photo, I went with four falafel wraps, set against my signature black background. Three wraps are arranged along the base, with a fourth stacked above. Each one features sesame-crusted falafel tucked into pita bread and layered with fresh tomato, pickled vegetables, greens, and tahini sauce—exactly as it came, with no styling or edits.

Falafel by itself is often considered a fast food. In wrap form, it becomes a highly portable meal, emphasizing convenience without losing any of the original flavor or texture. National Egg Roll Day – A Stack Worth Photographing

Today is National Egg Roll Day, which recognizes one of the most iconic—and uniquely American—adaptations of Chinese cuisine. The egg roll, with its thick wheat flour wrapper and fried exterior, has become a takeout staple across the country. While its origins are loosely tied to Chinese spring rolls, the American egg roll took on a life of its own in the 20th century, evolving into something crispier, heavier, and more filled with meat and cabbage than its traditional counterparts.

National Egg Roll Day was launched in 2019 by Van’s Kitchen, a Dallas-based food manufacturer, to honor the deep roots of egg rolls in American food culture and to recognize immigrant-founded food businesses. Since then, it has quietly earned a spot on the food holiday calendar each June 10.

For this photograph, I picked up 18 Panda Express chicken egg rolls—one of the most widely available fast food versions. Panda Express, with over 2,200 locations across the U.S., serves more egg rolls than any other chain of its kind. According to industry data, the brand sells millions of them annually, with egg rolls consistently listed among their top-selling sides. They come filled with cabbage, carrots, and chicken, wrapped in a thick fried shell. Here, I tore some of them open and piled them into a stack on my black background. Topped with their three most common condiments—sweet and sour sauce, hot mustard, and chili sauce—they’re shown as served. Nothing added, nothing styled.

🥬 National Veggie Burger Day – June 5

It’s National Veggie Burger Day—a time to consider what a burger can be without the beef.

First launched in 2017 by the vegetarian food company Amy’s Kitchen, the day was created to encourage people to try plant-based burgers and explore their benefits to health and the environment. Whether for ethical reasons, sustainability, or curiosity, veggie burgers continue to gain ground in the fast food world and beyond.

This is my photograph of five Burger King Impossible Whoppers, casually stacked on a black background. Each sandwich features a sesame seed bun, flame-grilled Impossible patty, tomato, lettuce, onion, pickles, ketchup, and mayo—served exactly as ordered, no styling or prep.

The Impossible patty, made primarily from soy protein and heme (a molecule found in both plants and meat), was developed to replicate the flavor and texture of beef. Introduced nationwide by Burger King in 2019, the Impossible Whopper remains the most widely known fast food veggie burger in the U.S.

🥚 National Egg Day – Cracked, Spilled, and Photographed


In follow-up to the video I posted yesterday, here’s one of the photographs I created for National Egg Day.

This image features six white raw eggs dropped onto a black background—unrestrained, unstyled, and exactly as they landed. The broken shells and splattered yolks are captured as-is, embracing the natural chaos that comes from cracking open a few eggs for the sake of art.

National Egg Day is observed each year on June 3rd in the United States. While the exact origins of the day are unclear, eggs have long been celebrated as one of the most versatile and widely consumed ingredients in the world. They’ve been central to countless cuisines and traditions, from humble breakfasts to elaborate dishes. The day is a reminder of the egg’s enduring place in the kitchen—and in culture.

This photograph is part of my ongoing From Bag to Background series, where food is presented without interference or idealization—just honest, direct imagery against deep black. Whether it’s fast food or something as simple as a raw egg, I’m interested in what the subject becomes when stripped of context and allowed to just be.

Tomorrow is National Egg Day, and I’ve been photographing six white raw eggs—whole, cracked, and smashed—on my black background. This short video captures part of the shoot: eggs breaking, yolks spilling, and everything landing just where gravity intended.

National Biscuit Day – From Can to Camera

Today, May 29, is National Biscuit Day—a good moment to take a closer look at a humble staple that’s been on American tables for generations. Whether eaten with breakfast, served with fried chicken, or just pulled apart warm from the oven, biscuits have long held a place in American food culture.

For this photo, I used three standard tubes of refrigerated biscuit dough. Part of the experience is the packaging itself: peeling back the paper seam and waiting for that sudden pop as the tube bursts open. It’s a moment of kitchen theater that’s been happening since the 1950s, when pre-packaged refrigerated dough started appearing in supermarkets.

No styling here—just 24 biscuits baked as-is and casually stacked onto a black background. The domed tops, crisp golden crusts, and flaky layers hold up visually without any need for extras.

Sonic Hot Dogs for Memorial Day

Memorial Day might be known for backyard grills, parades, and remembrance—but let’s not forget the American tradition of food, and especially fast food.

This photo features a stack of Sonic hot dogs—five All-American dogs topped with ketchup, mustard, relish, and chopped onions, and five Chili Cheese Coneys loaded with beef chili and melted cheddar. They were ordered with standard condiments, photographed unaltered, and presented exactly as served. No stylists, no tweaks. Just how they looked coming out of the bag.

Part of my ongoing From Bag to Background series, this shoot keeps the focus on the food itself—raw, excessive, and unmistakably American. The visual contrast of bright toppings against a black background amplifies what these items really are: edible symbols of road trips, summer, and casual indulgence.

Sonic Drive-In has been a fixture of American car culture since 1953, when it began as a root beer stand in Shawnee, Oklahoma. It quickly expanded into a nationwide chain known for its curbside service, carhops on roller skates, and all-American menu. Hot dogs—especially chili dogs—have been a core part of that menu since the early days, long before the arrival of the footlong in 2010. Sonic’s hot dogs remain rooted in drive-in tradition, served fast, topped generously, and wrapped in foil like a handshake from another era.

National Shrimp Day and Popeyes

May 10 is National Shrimp Day, a reminder that not all fast food comes in burger form. This is my photo of fried shrimp from Popeyes—unembellished, straight from the packaging, and photographed just as it was served.

While fried shrimp might not be the first thing people associate with fast food, Popeyes has carved out a place for itself in that space. Founded in 1972 in New Orleans by Al Copeland, Popeyes began with spicy fried chicken and a commitment to Louisiana-style flavors. But by the 1980s, seafood had become part of the menu, reflecting the culinary traditions of the Gulf Coast. Their fried shrimp—seasoned, battered, and fried with the same boldness as their chicken—has since become a customer favorite.

Popeyes now operates more than 4,300 locations worldwide, making it one of the largest fast food chains with a distinctly regional identity. Its menu has maintained a Southern character even as it expanded globally, and items like the fried shrimp have helped distinguish it from other chains.

Fast food seafood has long had a credibility problem, often treated as a token item on menus dominated by burgers, nuggets, or tacos. Popeyes helped shift that perception by offering shrimp that is consistently rated among the best in fast food—crispy, spicy, and more thoughtfully prepared than one might expect.

What’s Left Behind on the Parchment

Parchment paper tells its own story. The browned impressions, the outlines of where the food once rested—heat, placement, and process left behind. Nothing arranged here, just the baking sheet as it came out of the oven.

Cooking on parchment paper keeps things from sticking, makes cleanup easy, and sometimes leaves behind these quiet little records of what just happened. Any guesses what was baked on this tray?

Pigs in a blanket—simple, nostalgic, and still one of the most popular finger foods in America.

For National Pigs In A Blanket Day, I photographed Hebrew National beef franks wrapped in puff pastry, baked straight from the box. After coming out of the oven, I dropped them onto a black background and shot them as they landed. A few were cut open to show the interior, but otherwise there was no styling, no arrangement—just the food as it is.

The concept of wrapping meat in dough dates back centuries, with versions found across Europe. The American take gained popularity in the 1950s, and brands like Pillsbury cemented its place in kitchens and party platters starting in the 1970s. Today, pigs in a blanket remain a staple for game days, holidays, and buffet tables—ranking among the top five most popular Super Bowl snacks in the U.S.

Today is “National English Muffin Day” — a nod to the simple breakfast classic with its nooks and crannies.

My photograph of Thomas’ English Muffins, casually stacked and fork-split to reveal their airy interiors, stays true to how they come straight from the package. First sold in New York City in 1880 by British immigrant Samuel Bath Thomas, these muffins were originally called “toaster crumpets” before becoming the American breakfast staple we know today.

National McDonald’s Day: Big Macs, McNuggets, Fries, and Apple Pie — From Bag to Background

It is National McDonald’s Day! A moment to acknowledge the fast food giant that reshaped global eating habits.

My photograph features four of McDonald’s most iconic and historically significant menu items, photographed straight from the bag to the black background:

🍔 **Big Mac** – Introduced in 1967 in Pittsburgh, the Big Mac became a national item by 1968. Known for its triple bun and “special sauce,” it’s arguably the most famous fast food burger in the world.

🍗 **Chicken McNuggets** – Launched in 1983 after years of development, McNuggets brought uniform shapes and dipping sauces to the mainstream. Their popularity reshaped how fast food chains approached snacks and sides.

🍟 **French Fries** – A staple since the beginning. McDonald’s fries, once cooked in beef tallow, have long been a benchmark for fast food fries worldwide.

🥧 **Apple Pie** – First sold in 1968 as a deep-fried dessert, the pie was later baked for health-conscious appeal. Its rectangular form and hot filling remain a nostalgic favorite.

This isn’t melted cheese for nostalgia’s sake. It’s ten Sonic grilled cheese sandwiches—photographed exactly as they came, stacked into a slightly chaotic, slightly perfect wall of toast and cheese. A quiet cult favorite on the Sonic menu for decades. Cheap. Unchanged. And still here.

Twinkies, Twenty of Them


Twinkies, twenty of them for National Twinkie Day today!

April 6, 1930 — James Dewar invents the Twinkie in River Forest, Illinois. He names it after a roadside ad that read: “Twinkle Toe Shoes — the kids’ favorite”. Banana filling at first. Vanilla took over during WWII, and never left.

Since then, they’ve been everywhere: bunkers, lunchboxes, courtrooms, campaign speeches, urban legends. They were discontinued in 2012, mourned like pop stars, then brought back in 2013. This is nostalgia. And a little bit of history.
