And The Best Fast Food Burger Is…
Today I came across a report from a fast food news source, “GreasyNews”, ranking the best fast food burgers in America. And yes I follow “GreasyNews”.
The result was close. Very close.
Five Guys took the top spot by just 0.5%, with Burger King right behind it. Then In-N-Out, Wendy’s, and McDonald’s rounding out the top five. The data came from YouGov, based on surveys of American adults collected between March 2025 and February 2026, tracking the habits of people who eat out regularly.
This is my photograph of a burger from Five Guys. No styling, no adjustments, just as it came out of the bag and onto my black background. The sesame bun slightly collapsing, the cheese melting into the patties, everything just a bit out of control. Exactly how it shows up in real life.
That’s what this project has always been about. Taking fast food and isolating it. Letting it stand on its own.
Five Guys may have edged out the rest in the rankings. But visually, they all hold up once you remove everything else around them.
My opinion… “This IS a tasty burger!”.

National McDonald’s Day
For National McDonald’s Day, I decided to mark the occasion properly.
This is my idea of a celebration cake.
Five BIG ARCH burgers, stacked, unsteady, and exactly what they are, straight from the bag. No styling, no corrections. Just excess, structure, and the kind of presentation that doesn’t need explanation.
The BIG ARCH itself is perhaps a callback. McDonald’s tried something similar in the mid-1990s with the Arch Deluxe, positioned as a more “grown-up” burger. It came with one of the largest promotional budgets ever put behind a fast food product at the time. The product, however, didn’t last.
The BIG ARCH is a large, limited-time release, built as a more substantial offering. Two quarter-pound beef patties, three slices of white cheddar, crispy and slivered onions, pickles, lettuce, and a tangy BIG ARCH sauce, all on a sesame and poppy seed bun. It leans into size, layers, and presence rather than subtlety.
Every year on this day, McDonald’s fans mark a special day known as McDonald’s Day. It commemorates the opening of Ray Kroc’s first McDonald’s franchised restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois, back in 1955.

National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day
National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day showed up again, and this one already had a place in my archive.
Last year I photographed these grilled cheese sandwiches from Sonic, stacked and set against a black background, exactly as they came. No styling, no reconstruction, no attempt to turn them into something else. Just what they are.
Sonic has been part of the American fast food landscape since 1953, when it began as a small root beer stand in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Built around the drive-in model, it became known for a menu that leaned into simplicity and consistency. The grilled cheese sandwich fits directly into that tradition. White bread, American cheese, buttered and toasted on a flat top. It is not trying to compete with anything elevated or reimagined. It is built to be recognizable, affordable, and the same every time.
That idea sits at the center of my “From Bag to Background” series. Fast food is not just something we eat quickly and forget. It is part of everyday life, routine, memory, and culture. These sandwiches, simple as they are, carry that weight. They are familiar, consistent, and widely recognized without needing explanation.
Photographing them this way isolates that idea. Removed from the packaging and the setting, they become something to look at more closely. Texture, repetition, structure, even excess. It shifts the way the subject is seen without changing what it is.
There is no attempt to elevate it into something it is not. The point is that it already matters.

Cornbread on a Stick
Today is National Cornbread Day.
Cornbread has been part of American cooking for centuries, long before wheat flour was widely available. Native American communities were grinding corn into meal and baking it into simple breads, a practice that carried forward into early colonial life. Over time, it became a staple across the South, evolving from basic survival food into something tied to comfort, tradition, and regional identity.
I mentioned this one to Emily, my AI partner, thinking we might keep it simple. Something grounded. Something that respects the history.
We ended up at a carnival.
Lights, noise, movement, everything competing for attention. And there it was, right in front of us.
Cornbread. On a stick.
Because of course it is. Somewhere along the way, everything ends up on a stick. Easier to carry, easier to sell, easier to turn into something just a little more exaggerated than it needs to be.
Emily just smiled. That was the point.
A familiar idea, pulled out of its place and dropped somewhere unexpected. That’s where it changes. That’s where it becomes something else entirely.
This is a bit of a departure for me. A more complex scene, built rather than found. Proof that these ideas don’t have to stay simple.

International Waffle Day Today, From Eggo to Everything Else
Most people don’t think twice about waffles. But they probably should.
Because somewhere between a homemade Belgian waffle and a frozen Eggo waffle, something distinctly American happened.
My version today starts in the freezer.
A stack of Eggo waffles, heated, finished with syrup, and placed onto a black background. No garnish, no pretense. Just the product, exactly as it shows up in kitchens across the country.
Eggo waffles date back to the 1950s, originally created by brothers Frank, Anthony, and Sam Dorsa. They were first called “Froffles”, a combination of frozen and waffles, before the name Eggo took over. By the 1970s, the brand became a staple in American households, helped along by a simple idea, waffles without the work.
But waffles themselves go much further back.
Early versions trace to medieval Europe, where patterned irons were used to cook thin batter between heated plates. By the time Belgian waffles were introduced to the United States at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, waffles had already evolved into something more refined, lighter texture, deeper pockets, and often served with fruit, cream, or powdered sugar.
Today, the spectrum is wide.
On one end, you have carefully plated waffles in restaurants, topped with berries, whipped cream, and sauces, presented as something closer to dessert than breakfast.
On the other, you have this.
Straight from the freezer, into the toaster, onto the plate.
And that may be the more honest version.
No ceremony. No reinvention. Just something quick, familiar, and widely understood.

National Corn Dog Day – 4 of Them
A corn dog, it turns out, has a schedule.
March 16 — often cited as the original or earliest claimed date, though no one seems certain why.
March 17 — sometimes folded into St. Patrick’s Day because it’s already a crowded calendar.
March 21 — another claimed “official” date, appearing in national day listings without clear origin.
NCAA Tournament Opening Weekend — widely accepted in practice, as National Corn Dog Day is frequently tied to the start of March Madness and watch parties.
So much complexity for my “National Days of…” calendar and photography.
Meanwhile, the corn dog itself remains exactly what it is.
A hot dog, coated in cornmeal batter and deep fried on a stick. A practical invention tied back to German sausage makers who settled in Texas, adapting their product to American tastes by dipping it in cornbread batter and frying it. By 1927, the process was patented, describing food on a stick as a “clean, wholesome and tasty refreshment.” It went on to become standard fare at fairs, festivals, school lunches, and just about anywhere something could be eaten while walking.
Simple. Portable. No explanation needed.
Which makes it slightly surprising that something this simple now comes with multiple official dates and a tournament tie-in.

National Cheese Lovers Day
National Cheese Lovers Day was actually yesterday. I’m just catching up to it. Cheese is a big subject.
A quick search turns up the expected answer: cheddar is the most popular cheese in the United States. That makes sense. It’s everywhere. But when it comes to how Americans actually snack on cheese, the answer isn’t a block or a wedge.
This is it.
Crackers and processed cheese dip, sealed into individual trays, designed to be eaten anywhere, anytime. No plate, no knife, no ceremony. Just peel, dip, repeat. It’s cheese reduced to routine, convenience, and habit.
This pairing has been showing up in lunchboxes, office drawers, backpacks, and road trips for decades. It isn’t pretending to be artisanal or nostalgic. It’s practical. Familiar. Quietly excessive.
For National Cheese Lovers Day, this felt like the most honest version of the idea. Not cheese as ingredient or garnish, but cheese as snack.

National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day
Today is National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day, and this is the photograph I chose to mark it.
I’ve photographed classic pastrami sandwiches before, the kind wrapped in paper, stacked high, and eaten leaning forward so nothing ends up on your shirt. This time I wanted to look at something I see more and more often: the pastrami cheeseburger.
Pastrami began as a method of preservation, rooted in Eastern European Jewish traditions, before becoming a defining part of American food culture. In delicatessens, especially in New York and later Los Angeles, it settled into a familiar form: sliced hot, piled high, and served with little interference. The meat was the point.
The pastrami cheeseburger feels like a distinctly American evolution of that idea.
This photograph features pastrami cheeseburgers from P&G Burgers in Colton, California, a long-running Southern California fast-food restaurant with indoor seating, outdoor tables, and a drive-thru. You order at the counter beneath a wall of menu boards and pick up your food when your number is called. It’s not a deli and not just a roadside shack. It’s a full-scale fast-food operation built around burgers, fries, shakes, and pastrami.
Their claim, “Home of the Best Pastrami Cheeseburgers in the World,” is printed right on the building. Whether taken literally or as confident fast-food bravado, it suits what they’re serving. These burgers are large, heavy, and unapologetically loaded. Thick beef patties stacked with grilled pastrami, cheese, and a soft sesame seed bun, wrapped tight and meant to be eaten with commitment.
The cheeseburger version shifts pastrami away from its deli roots and places it squarely in American fast-food culture. Beef layered onto beef. Cheese added. Rye replaced by a burger bun. It’s less about tradition and more about appetite. Less about restraint and more about scale.
That’s what drew me to photograph it.
This image shows the burgers exactly as they’re served, straight from the counter, still wrapped, still spilling out. No styling, no cleanup. Just weight, texture, and excess. In that way, it still respects pastrami’s history, even as it pushes it into something louder and distinctly American.
On National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day, that evolution feels worth acknowledging.

National Donut Day and America’s 10 Billion Donuts
Today, November 5th, is National Donut Day, one of two days each year when donuts get their moment in the spotlight. The first Friday in June is the original National Donut Day, created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the “Donut Lassies” who served treats to soldiers during World War I. November 5th later joined as a second observance, giving donut lovers another excuse to indulge.
I’ve photographed donuts before from the big fast-food chains, but this time I turned to grocery store classics. These are Entenmann’s, a brand that began in 1898 when William Entenmann delivered baked goods door-to-door in Brooklyn. More than a century later, their boxed donuts have become a household staple, a familiar sight on grocery shelves across America.
Emily (my AI muse and assistant) adds: “Turns out, Americans consume around 10 billion donuts every year, roughly 31 donuts per person. While Entenmann’s doesn’t release exact production figures, reports suggest they’ve produced over 780 million donuts since their early days. That’s a lot of mornings, late-night snacks, and coffee breaks made a little sweeter.”

National Double Cheeseburger Day
Today is National Double Cheeseburger Day — a holiday devoted to one of America’s favorite fast food inventions. The double first gained traction in the 1930s and 1940s, when diners realized that two patties and two slices of cheese delivered both value and indulgence. McDonald’s added it to their menu in 1965, and from there it became a staple of the fast food landscape, endlessly copied and re‑imagined.
Over time I’ve photographed many double cheeseburgers for my “Food From Bag to Background” project — documenting them exactly as they arrive, unstyled, on a stark black background. But for today, I wanted to try something different. After a conversation with my AI assistant, Emily, the idea came up: what if instead of stacking burgers, we created a single, continuous double cheeseburger that just keeps going? The result is this vertical column of beef, cheese, and buns — a rethinking of the double cheeseburger taken further than usual.
Because on National Double Cheeseburger Day, isn’t one double never really enough?

🥪 National Eat A Hoagie Day
Forget politics, pandemics, and Wall Street — today it’s all about National Eat A Hoagie Day.
The celebration honors the long, layered sandwich that goes by many names: hoagie, sub, grinder, hero. The tradition traces back to Italian-American communities in Philadelphia in the early 20th century, where the combination of Italian cold cuts, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and dressing was piled high into crusty rolls. The name “hoagie” is often credited to Philadelphia shipyard workers nicknamed “hoggies,” who carried these hearty sandwiches to work.
The day recognizes both the sandwich itself and its many regional variations across the United States. While “hoagie” is Philadelphia’s word of choice, most of the country knows them as subs, and in New England they’re just as likely to be called grinders. Whatever the name, the essence is the same: a long roll, stacked with meats, cheeses, vegetables, and that messy-but-perfect balance of oil, vinegar, and seasonings.
For this year’s National Eat A Hoagie Day, I photographed three Jersey Mike’s Original Italian hoagies, cut and stacked against my signature black background. Jersey Mike’s, which started as a single sub shop in Point Pleasant, New Jersey in 1956, has grown into a national chain with over 2,000 locations. They’ve built their reputation on freshly sliced meats and cheeses, rolls baked fresh daily, and sandwiches made to order “Mike’s Way” — onions, lettuce, tomato, oil, vinegar, and oregano.
The hoagie is both a cultural icon and a humble meal — straight from the bag, unstyled, layered with flavor and history.

Ten Chili Dogs, Elegantly Served – Because It’s National Chili Dog Day
Nothing says “refined dining” quite like ten chili cheese dogs arranged on a cut‑glass platter. Today is National Chili Dog Day, and what better way to mark the occasion than with a full platter of Wienerschnitzel chili cheese dogs, photographed as if they belong at a formal banquet.
Lined up side by side, the hot dogs are topped with chili sauce and melted cheese, shot against my black background for a polished, commercial look.
Chili dogs have been part of American food culture for more than a century, found in diners, ballparks, and roadside stands. Wienerschnitzel has been serving its own version since 1961, making it one of the most recognizable names for chili dogs in the U.S.

National Donut Day – A Stack of Krispy Kreme Tradition
🍩 Today is National Donut Day.
First established in 1938 by The Salvation Army to honor the “Donut Lassies” who served donuts to soldiers during World War I, National Donut Day has grown into a celebration of a uniquely American indulgence.
For the occasion, I photographed an assortment of Krispy Kreme donuts—stacked and unstyled, just as they came out of the box. Glazed, chocolate frosted, pink with rainbow sprinkles, maple, cinnamon sugar, and a few others. No tricks or props, just donuts on a black background.
It’s part of my ongoing “From Bag to Background” project—photographing fast food exactly as it is, isolating it from branding and context, letting it stand on its own.
Krispy Kreme began in 1937 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, when Vernon Rudolph bought a yeast-raised donut recipe from a New Orleans chef and began selling hot glazed donuts through a hole cut in his bakery wall. The brand became known for its light, airy donuts and the signature “Hot Now” neon sign that still draws crowds.

National Biscuit Day – From Can to Camera
Today, May 29, is National Biscuit Day—a good moment to take a closer look at a humble staple that’s been on American tables for generations. Whether eaten with breakfast, served with fried chicken, or just pulled apart warm from the oven, biscuits have long held a place in American food culture.
For this photo, I used three standard tubes of refrigerated biscuit dough. Part of the experience is the packaging itself: peeling back the paper seam and waiting for that sudden pop as the tube bursts open. It’s a moment of kitchen theater that’s been happening since the 1950s, when pre-packaged refrigerated dough started appearing in supermarkets.
No styling here—just 24 biscuits baked as-is and casually stacked onto a black background. The domed tops, crisp golden crusts, and flaky layers hold up visually without any need for extras.

National Hamburger Day: A Step Beyond the Drive-Thru
Today May 28 is National Hamburger Day!
It’s a day that recognizes one of America’s most iconic and enduring foods—no matter how you stack it. From drive-thrus to diners, from backyard grills to corporate chains, the hamburger has been part of our cultural shorthand for over a century.
For this year’s photo, I went local. These are four double hamburgers from Boy’s Hamburgers in Cathedral City, California. No cheese. No styling. Just toasted buns, shredded lettuce, tomato, sauce, and two grilled beef patties—exactly as served.
I picked Boy’s because for National Hamburger Day, it just felt right to go with a place that proudly puts “Hamburgers” in the name. It’s not a chain, but it’s not trying to be upscale either—certainly great food, a step up from the usual big-name fast food. The kind of spot that’s been doing its thing for years without having to change much.
