National Onion Day and the Most Common Ingredient in My Fast Food Project

Today is National Onion Day.

Onions may not get much attention by themselves, but they are one of the most important ingredients in cooking. Whether they’re sliced onto burgers, diced into chili, caramelized for soups, battered into onion rings, or mixed into countless other dishes, it’s hard to imagine a kitchen without them.

After three years of photographing fast food, I realized onions have probably appeared in more of my photographs than any other single ingredient. They show up on burgers, tacos, pizzas, hot dogs, sandwiches, onion rings, salads, and dozens of other menu items.

For this photograph, I decided to make the onions themselves the subject. White, yellow, and red onions are shown whole, halved, sliced, and separated into rings, revealing the remarkable variety of colors, shapes, and patterns hidden beneath their skins.

National Margherita Pizza Day

Today has been National Margherita Pizza Day.

It has not quite worked out the way I thought it might.

For starters, I discovered that Margherita Pizza does not come with tequila. Wrong kind of Margarita. That was disappointing.

Then, as I walked away to do something else, I heard someone ask, “Is it okay to eat?”

I said yes, but I need enough left to photograph.

Apparently I should have been more specific.

Margherita pizza is one of the simplest and most recognizable pizza styles. It is traditionally made with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and basil. According to the popular story, it was created in Naples, Italy, in 1889 and named after Queen Margherita of Savoy. The red tomatoes, white mozzarella, and green basil were said to represent the colors of the Italian flag.

In this case, the pizza survived long enough for me to get a photograph, although just barely.

International Pizza and Beer Day Because Some Pairings Just Work

Apparently, there’s a day for almost everything now — and today it’s International Pizza and Beer Day. Somewhere between the invention of the calendar and the internet’s obsession with food holidays, we ended up with a reason to toast to pepperoni and foam.

The scene says it all: two friends, a beach, the last rays of the day, and a pizza waiting patiently between them. Maybe it’s celebration. Maybe it’s strategy. Either way, it’s hard to argue with the logic — some pairings just work.

A Monument to Cheese Pizza

Another entry from the calendar of invented holidays: National Cheese Pizza Day. As if anyone needed a reminder to eat melted cheese on bread. Still, here it is — and so is my monument to it. Two frozen Red Baron cheese pizzas sliced and stacked into a tower of excess, photographed against a black background.

Cheese pizza is the baseline of the whole idea. From Naples in the 1800s with mozzarella and tomato on flatbread, to Lombardi’s in New York serving it to immigrants in the early 1900s, it’s the foundation on which every other topping variation was built. Frozen in the 1950s, it became the fallback dinner most of us know.

So if today calls for honoring cheese pizza, this is mine.

National Pizza Day x Super Bowl Sunday—A Perfect Pairing 🍕🏈

Today marks the rare overlap of National Pizza Day and Super Bowl Sunday, two occasions that bring people together—one for the love of football and the other for the love of pizza.

Pepperoni pizza isn’t just a favorite; it’s the most popular pizza in the U.S. While pizza’s origins go back to Naples, Italy, it evolved into something uniquely American when it arrived in the States. By the mid-20th century, the combination of crispy, spicy pepperoni and melted cheese became the go-to order, cementing its place in food culture.

One company played a major role in making pepperoni pizza a household staple: Domino’s. What started as a small operation in 1960 grew into the largest pizza chain in both the U.S. and the world, delivering millions of pizzas every day.

My photograph captures a fresh Domino’s pepperoni pizza—golden crust, bubbling cheese, and plenty of pepperoni, set against my signature black background. It’s a simple yet timeless image of the world’s favorite pizza on a day when millions will be enjoying a slice.

Oops, almost missed it! Happy National Pepperoni Pizza Day! 🍕 This most popular of all types of pizza was likely crafted by Italian immigrants in NYC back in 1919.
