Just ran across this. My photographs have wrapped buses in Las Vegas, been on billboards, the sides of entire buildings, Times Square, and been in as many as 300 publications monthly around the world. Kind of lucky I guess and Thankful.
From a photo shoot I did for a magazine series about fitness in the military. At March Air Reserve Base. Photo shoot note… I shot this with a Phase One medium format camera system.
“International Firefighters’ Day is observed each year on 4th May. On this date you are invited to remember the past firefighters who have died while serving our community or dedicated their lives to protecting the safety of us all. At the same time, we can show our support and appreciation to the firefighters world wide who continue to protect us so well throughout the year.”
“The role of a firefighter in today’s society – be it urban, rural, natural environment, volunteer, career, industrial, defence force, aviation, motor sport, or other is one of dedication, commitment and sacrifice – no matter what country we reside and work in. In the fire service we fight together against one common enemy – fire – no matter what country we come from, what uniform we wear or what language we speak.”
– Lt JJ Edmondson, 1999
I am very excited to be included in the APA Sourcebook 2020. Actual publication this Spring. A good way to start the New Year!
“We are American Photographic Artists. Since 1981, our association has included some of the most accomplished, most sought-after, most creative photographers, photo
editors, representatives, and producers from around the world.”
“Once again, we’re pleased to offer this annual showcase of our members’ work. Once again, we think the work is pretty amazing. We hope you’ll step away from your daily routine for a few minutes, page through the book, and remember why we all got into this business in the first place – because we love photography.”
Continuing my theme of shooting instant photographs. My photo shoot with Shauna Toerner had me bring out my Fujifilm Instax mini camera. We had so much fun shooting these and many more too.
Are you one of the ad agencies, editorial publications, design firms, and select companies around the US that received the 2019 APA Sourcebook? Yes I am in it. Thanks!
She has me looking back over my shoulder. Something there? Photo shoot at the Salton Sea with model XtIne. Hasselblad digital camera system and Broncolor lighting. Thanks!
Some more posing behind the scenes with model Xtine at Bombay Beach at the Salton Sea. The BTS video here was not lit. Sun directly behind her. Lighting the photo shoot was with a Broncolor white beauty dish held by my assistant with a Broncolor 1200L Move pack. I was using a Hasselblad digital camera system.
Note the very windy conditions. I have seen photographers bring soft boxes and umbrellas out here for light modifiers and try to put them on light stands. Not a good plan. The wind just turns that stuff into kites.
Another point is having a model who can pose without being micro-managed. The model will not be able to hear you over the wind noise. So your discussion of posing will all be between “takes”.
The first order of business… select a great model! Makes all the difference in the world. Gabriella Muttone is one of the absolute great models I have had in front of my cameras. An extraordinary photographer herself, she has a keen sense of body movement, facial expression and style. You can see in this photograph from our photo shoot at the Palm Springs Air Museum how she places herself so perfectly with this aircraft, engine and propeller. Just wonderful!
Photo shoot notes… Hasselblad digital camera system and Broncolor lightning. The aircraft is a beautiful Grumman F8F Bearcat. The design for this was done by my good friend and superb graphic design artist Dennis Johnson. Only the best! Thanks!
There are not many photos of me but this seems to be one of everyone’s favorites. I am not sure why. Behind the scenes in studio for a print advertising, editorial and video photo shoot for Bodybuilding.com with Maria Rogers. One of my all time best ever!
Sometimes I prefer simplicity. A 45 year old Polaroid instant film camera and one of my favorite models, Aristodeme. I think I will do more of this in my photo shoots. What do you think?
So great fun doing photo shoots in interesting and scenic places. Sometimes they do not seem scenic at first, but then just use your imagination. The imagination of knowing what something will look like in the photograph. One of my favorite photo shoots, this time with bodybuilder Daniel Hill.
Fun shooting behind the scenes photos with instant film cameras. This one with the Fujifilm Instax. Of course no one really cares because I know you are staring at the magnificent Noel VanBrocklin. Model, actress and the stunning creature in the blue lagoon of my pool. Shoot notes… lighting is a Broncolor Move 1200L and Broncolor beauty dish. The actual shoot with a Hasselblad digital camera system. Often overlooked, the stand and boom are Matthews Studio Equipment. Wonderful and sexy makeup and hair styling by Blanche LeBeau.
Next time you tell me some “photographer” gave you 4000 “raw” photos from your shoot on a DVD. Don’t know Mapplethorpe? Most recent was his simultaneous exhibits at the Getty and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Among my very favorite photographs I have shot over the years. One of the most respected individuals in bodybuilding and fitness, my friend Doug Brignole. This photo makes me think about what we really do in the gym, struggle and overcome ourselves to be a better person. Not to just lose weight, have bigger arms or a more shapely butt. The idea is to be a better us and somewhat in turn, make it a better world in the best way we can for each of us. Thanks!
The ever so gorgeous Maria Bertrand, often in front of my camera. And my friend! I am so lucky that so very many of the beautiful women and good looking guys I photograph become and remain my friends.
One of my buddies was walking around an event with me a few months ago. He said, looking around at the crowd… “None of these people look like the people you photograph”. Very true! Nothing wrong with it but the thought stayed with me. I do indeed work and live in a different world than many. Just different. I guess I did recognize that some time back when I named the portfolios on my Website as “My World”.
So maybe visit the “My World’s” on my Website at SecondFocus.com. Maria Bertrand is certainly there. Some of you too are there. And there will be more, changing it soon! Thanks!
Shoot notes… Maria Bertrand photographed by me. Makeup and Hair Styling by the Estee Lauder featured Blanche LeBeau. Hasselblad digital camera system. Broncolor lighting. Only the best!
It was not John Black‘s first photo shoot. He has actually been getting some good modeling jobs. But it was his first photo shoot with me. First photo shoots are important because it gets you into a mindset so you know how each other works. Then when I have an assigned or commissioned shoot, I can cast or recommend you with confidence. So John is now up at the top of my list. Shoot notes… Photographed here in Palm Springs. Hasselblad digital camera system and Broncolor lighting. Only the best!
Hey! This Saturday you will find me at the FitExpo in Anaheim along many thousands of my other friends. If you would like to meet up, send me a message, e-mail or text. My contact info is in the “About” and “Contact”sections here or go to my website at http://SecondFocus.com
We could just say Hi or chat about shooting your photographs for yourself, your business, your gym, your advertising, your magazine and features. Just let me know and Thanks!
After posting photographs from my shoot with model John Black the other day, all I have been hearing is…. more please! Shoot notes… Hasselblad digital camera system and Broncolor lighting. Thanks!
I had been looking for a good looking guy to cast for a very sexy fashion editorial type shoot with a top professional woman model. So I sent her a photo of John Black after our photo shoot yesterday to see what she thought of him. The answer… “Holy Hell! Andddd when does he want to shoot? :)”. That is just too good!
That was my first time shooting with John. I expect there will be more. By the way, he is 6ft-2 and 23 years old, in case you wanted to know. He has been represented by an agency and has actually been doing good with print work, commercials and runway. Our photo shoot was in my pool in Palm Springs. A Hasselblad digital camera system and Broncolor lighting. Only the best!
If you read the bodybuilding and fitness magazines, visit the most popular websites, you have seen my photographs. All around the world, magazine features, advertising, brochures, billboards, bus wraps, 4 story high banners on the sides of buildings.
You work hard in the gym to get ahead and be your best like my buddy Travis Ely. You are spending your money for your ads to build your business. You are spending money to build features for your magazines or websites.
Talk to me about doing your photography. Send me an e-mail to Ian@SecondFocus.com. Also if you are going to be there, I will be at the Anaheim FitExpo on Saturday August 27th. Send me a note and we can meet and chat. Thanks!
Famed war photographer Robert Capa said “If your photographs are not good enough, you’re not close enough”. Probably not applicable here but I thought it was a good excuse to get closer to the gorgeous Sherry Goggin in our photo shoot. Click on this photo to see the photograph that was the result. One of my all time favorites and on my website at http://bit.ly/1Ik2Rgy
Model and actress, Noel VanBrocklin posing for my camera. She said “let me try this”. I said “That Works!”. My camera, Hasselblad digital, lighting by Broncolor. Wonderful Makeup and Hair Styling by Blanche LeBeau. Perfect!
