The Ace Show

This is fun… My photograph submission has been selected for the juried Artists Council Exhibition (ACE Show) 2024 at the Artists Center at the Galen in Palm Desert California. Previously the Galen was the East Exhibition Facility for the Palm Springs Art Museum. The show will run from February 7 through March 3rd. The ticketed opening reception is Friday February 9th, 5-7PM. It is always a sold out event. I am not showing the photograph online for now. Tickets for the opening reception available here… http://tinyurl.com/2ma7r5n3 Thanks!

Landing From The North

Aircraft landing from the North have always been among my favorite for photographs in Palm Springs. The World War II C-47 “What’s Up Doc?”.

The New Reno Air Races?

This is a good view of the airport in Thermal from flying Saturday. It is actually Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport. It is being considered for the new location for the Reno Air Races. 01-06-2024 Thermal California

BMW Performance Center

Flying out of the airport in Thermal takes you over the BMW Performance Center where people can drive high performance BMW’s on these two tracks. The circular track is highly polished concrete which can be sprayed with water. The cars easily hydroplane and spin. I have done it and it is almost as much fun as flying. 01-06-2024 Thermal California

Geothermal Power

Flying around the Salton Sea… One of eleven power stations of the Imperial Valley Geothermal Project. The area is the second largest Geothermal field in the United States. Lithium extraction and Geothermal power are expected to provide the financial resources to restore the Salton Sea and huge economic benefits to the region. 01-06-2024

The Shrinking Sea

It was a beautiful day to be flying around the Salton Sea. Perfectly clear and warm out, and the Sea was very blue.

However being familiar with the Sea since 2003, I can see the changes. The small lake, just one year ago, was an outlet to the Salton Sea. In prior years at the height of the popularity of the Sea, it had a busy boat ramp and even a fishing supply and bait shop. The shrinking of the Salton Sea continues at an alarming rate and poses a significant ecological disaster. 01-06-2024

My Selfie

I know you are all looking at me on the left and not Larissa Reis. From our photoshoot.

Posing At Bombay Beach

A behind the scenes look posing for our photoshoot with 6ft tall model Xtine at the Salton Sea at Bombay Beach.

Grammys

Getting ready for the Grammys 2006 at Staples Center. Photography has certainly taken me on some fun adventures.

The Reading Room

Sometimes models just drop by to read and look at my collection of large format photo books and magazines. Model Jamie Lovelle.

A Photograph Within A Photograph Within A Photograph

A photograph within a photograph within a photograph. I was walking around Budapest when I came upon this very large print in the front window of the X-6 Gallery. I love this woman, her face, her legs and this automobile. Wonderfully photographed.

So I shot a photograph of the photograph through the window. It also created a selfie of me shooting the photograph and off to the left the architecture of that street. From my photo archives.

UCLA Medical Center

An aerial view of UCLA Medical Center in Westwood (Los Angeles) California. Note two helicopter pads on the rooftops upper right. From my photo archives.

Red Dress Castle District

I do like street photography. Especially when there is a specific element that draws my attention. No, not the license plate. Castle District Budapest. From my photo archives.

Distinct Look From A Lens

Makes me sorry I sold this lens some years back. More experienced photographers will recognize the type of lens I used to shoot this. And it was shot on film with a Canon 1v. One of my favorite all time cameras. From my archives.

Me At The Salton Sea

Photographing a model at the Salton Sea. She reached over and grabbed one of my film cameras and shot me back. From my photo archives.

Capitol Records On Film

From my archives… The Capitol Records building in Hollywood. I really like this photograph because it has that shot on film look. The reason it has that look is because I shot it on film.
When back in Los Angeles for photo projects, if I needed to be in the Hollywood area, I would sometimes stay across the street at the Redbury Hotel.

Sunspots 10-04-2023

The large Sunspot group near the center of the Sun is designated AR3452. It is actually made up of 36 individual Sunspots. It covers an area of approximately 730 million square kilometers. The surface of the Earth is approximately 517 million square kilometers. Palm Springs 10-04-2023

Modernism Eroticism

Modernism Week, an international event annually in Palm Springs. Alongside is the Fine Arts Fair which can be, in my eyes, a little more fun than just architecture and furniture. Here are some examples from 2015.

Naughty Booty by Steve Maloney.
Photograph of a work at the Palm Springs Fine Art Fair during Modernism Week. A more edgy work.

Dragonfly

A Dragonfly flying over a swimming pool. This might be the hardest thing to photograph I have ever attempted lol. Less than 20ft away with a 400mm lens. My second time trying, the first was a blowout. This time I figured out a way to do it, but this was still the only good one out of 252 frames. This is our resident pool Dragonfly so I will be going for some better shots soon.

Instinctive

After decades of shooting photographs I find it very instinctive to decide where to stand and how to frame my shots.

Creating Light

The artist in this painting duplicated the light he saw, used it to set the scene and made it highlight where he wanted to draw your gaze and attention. Just brilliant. Not unlike photography. The other day at the Huntington Library in San Marino CA.

Nova With Nova

When I was getting ready to do a photo shoot with Nova, I was excited to find that she had been featured in one of my favorite publications, “Victor” by Hasselblad. A beautiful publication that began as a very large format magazine and progressed to a book format. It is partially responsible for my having selected Hasselblad as my camera system.

So I was excited to have Nova sign her photograph in my copy of Hasselblad Victor Photography Book One during our photo shoot. And I am in great admiration of the original photograph and the series “Personal Visitation” by photographer Damon Loble. Applause!

This photograph with my Hasselblad digital camera and Broncolor lighting. Thanks!

Fine Art Nude?

A panel discussion at the Palm Springs Photo Festival last week raised the question of what is fine art photography. Personally I do not like definitions such as that. Is the difference between fine art and not fine art a really expensive frame perhaps. I guess this is my idea of a fine art nude. Aristodeme the model is nude and she is holding fine art. Photographed with a Hasselblad digital camera and Broncolor lighting. That equipment is fine art, and so is Aristodeme, of that I am sure!

Flying In To Muscle Beach

Of course Lisa Marino Sanders would arrive in her United States Air Force F-16 for her photo shoot with me at Venice Beach.

The high flying Makeup and Hair Styling by Natalie Lyle. Flight wear styling by April Ann Styles. And the real F-16 courtesy of the United States Air Force. Only at the real Muscle Beach for the real Muscle Beach/Venice bodybuilding and fitness shows.
